The holder of exclusive rights such as copyrights, brands, trade names, patents and model cannot only forbid others from using those rights. Via a license, the rights holder can in fact also exploit his rights commercially, by allowing others to make use of his rights, subject to certain conditions.

A license is a (limited) contractual right of use for other parties. Ownership remains with the rights holder. Licenses can be applied to knowhow, methods and specific techniques. Within a commercial structure, licenses can be used to create internal money flows. They can also be used as a form of protection against creditors or the bankruptcy of subsidiaries.
